New analysis of poverty in the European Union

The European Parliament has made a new analysis on how to tackle increased poverty in Europe.

In 2010, as part of the Europe 2020 strategy, Member States agreed on a target to have at least 20 million fewer people in or at risk of poverty and social exclusion by 2020. However since 2008 the number of people “at risk of poverty or social exclusion” has increased across Europe.

In 2014 almost one quarter of the EU population was at risk of poverty or social exclusion. Which social groups are at greater risk in Europe? What are the new forms of poverty emerging? What are the main determinants in today’s poverty? What are the policies implemented by the European Union to tackle this multidimensional phenomenon?

The European Parliament’s paper on poverty in the European Union offers a complete statistical overview of the recent trends of poverty across Europe and analyses the consequences of the crisis and the impact of the EU political actions implemented to counter poverty.
