On the 20 and 21st of May the European Youth Event took place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, gathering thousands of young Europeans to discuss on youth-related issues.
It was focusing on 5 main themes: War and Peace, Apathy or Participation, Exclusion or Access, Stagnation of Innovation, Collapse or Success. The collection of ideas will take shapes in an official EYE Report and will be followed by EYE hearings in various parliamentary committee in autumn 2016. Upon this event the European Parliament released briefings on the most important issues for youth nowadays in Europe, the main one being youth unemployment.
Even if the unemployment rates among young people have decreased since the crisis, it remains quite high compare to its level before the crisis (19, 4% in February 2016). Moreover, the young are at greater risk in terms of precariousness with 43% of youth employees on temporary contracts. To fight against today’s level of youth unemployment the EU has carried out a series of initiatives. Among those initiatives listed in the briefing, some are also including Norway such as the European Alliance for Apprenticeships to increase the quantity, quality and supply of apprenticeships or EURES programme and “Your fist EURES job” platform helping young people to find a job across Europe.
